“…our true home and the sweetest home is the place which is our place in life.”
— Hazrat Inayat Khan

“I’ve decided to leave.” My boss’ jaw drops, despite this not being our first conversation on the topic. “I want to seek a way to have greater impact.”

This was the most non-obvious reason to leave a lucrative job where I was leading a multinational business, negotiating with government officials and other companies, making deals and money as we grew, and otherwise doing all the sexy things you see executives doing in movies. Frequent international trips, good meals and wine, expensive vacations where I could cover friends and family, and all the other things that come with that… working 5am to 9pm (not a typo) and having to outsource many personal aspects of my life to make space for it all (salads delivered to my door for lunch — yikes!).

On the surface I had it all. But something was wrong. I had become a company asset, no longer a person. Like many of my busy career-driven friends I was drinking more wine more frequently, I wasn’t sleeping well, I was exhausted but using the adrenaline-rush of work to fill the gap, and I was desperately lonely for… my self. My true authentic self.
