Despite having not known them well, their departures close on the heels of one another has left a vacuum

It’s been a few weeks. First the house on the left became empty, and shortly after, it was the turn of those staying on the right to vacate the house. Within a short span both of my longstanding neighbors had decided to move on in life.

We shared the walls for more than three years. It isn’t that there was any emotional connection. There was no friendship among us. There was no caring or sharing involved. However, it’s been a few weeks since both the families left. Both the houses have new occupants, and I have started to miss both my longstanding neighbors of late.

Their departures close on the heels of one another has left a vacuum… a void.

T o be honest, my partner and I never had any proper conversations with any of the families in the period. It will suffice to say that things never went beyond the formal hello and thank you. Our families neither knew each other nor there was any serious attempt made towards that end. There was no attachment of any kind.

However, there were a few unwritten rules. First and foremost, there was mutual respect. It was never stated, always implied. Our families never intruded…
