Once upon a time, when disco bars were big, I was madly in love with my college girlfriend, Janice. My mission was to marry her even though she had different plans. You see, she considered me her “Spring Fling” in college. But I believed she was my future wife, and I meant it.

I needed a plan of action, fast! My parents were expecting me to “get a real job.” But the best strategy I could devise was working on a small farm three hours north of Philadephia, where Janice was living with college roommates in a condo they rented.

I was just out of college, clueless, and in debt, with student loan payments more than I could afford. The farm job paid a meager $3.50 an hour, which was brutal in Pennsylvania’s scorching, wet summer heat. Back then, the minimum wage was $3.35.

The year was 1983. One of the hottest movies was American Gigolo, starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton. Everything was cheap compared to today, although hyperinflation had taken America by storm in the late 70s. I wasn’t working for money as much as the hope of realizing my dream to marry Janice Miller.
