God and I have a great relationship, but we both see other people.”

— Dolly Parton

I got a call from an old girlfriend the other day. I hadn’t seen Sheila in over a year, but here she was saying she wouldn’t have called, but things were desperate. She needed my help.

She was still in Kitchener, still with Brad, her high school sweetheart. That’s who she left me for. They’d run into each other back in Kitchener. Sheila was visiting her mother, Cora. Brad was back from Calgary, divorced, looking to start over.

They fell in love again, moved in together, and now they were in the worst place they’d ever been in their lives.

So now they were sleeping in Cora’s basement, wondering what to do next.

It seems there was no work, no house, no Brad most of the time. They were living with Cora because Brad’s ex showed up from Calgary. Nikki — the ex — threatened to have him arrested for clearing out their joint bank account. He had to give her all his money. So now they were sleeping in Cora’s basement, wondering what to do next.
