Odd Encounters and Surprising Lessons From Living in a Hotel for 2 Years

The older man that wanted his son to be like me: Every time we saw each other in the breakfast room of the hotel, he would stop me while I was microwaving food or just hanging out, and start a conversation that inevitably lasted for at least 15–30 minutes. It’s not that I didn’t want to talk to him, but more often than not I had other things to do that day, but I was just too nice to tell him I was busy.

We talked about our jobs, our family, our upbringing, why we were both living in a hotel at the time, and at one point or another the topic of his son would always come about.

His son was a junior or senior in high school if I remember correctly, and his father would always talk about how his son was kind of lost in life, that he didn’t know what college he wanted to go to, or what he wanted to study. On more than one occasion, he asked me if I could talk to his son, try and guide him onto whatever path he wanted to pursue.

Now mind you, I was a 20-year old kid that had no f*cking clue what I was doing with my life. I was living with my then-girlfriend at the time who I was taking care of full-time because of certain physical injuries she had unfortunately…
