Torn notebook pages flew out of the school windows like giant confetti as U2’s “With or Without You” and laughter reverberated throughout the courtyard. The seniors didn’t even bother hiding beers and rakija bottles they stole from their parents. They were all getting ready for the big farewell party that night to celebrate the end of an era while ushering in a new one.

But I wouldn’t be going.

I still had one year left of school while the boy I’d been in love with for the last two years would be heading off to uni.

I knew the boy’s schedule by heart and where he’d be between classes. As I stood on the edge of a wide corridor, partly hidden by an opened classroom door, I watched him pass me by, and then climb the old stone staircase to the first floor. The boy was tall and slim, wearing his favourite “Red Star” basketball player’s jersey, the club he supported heart and soul.

He wasn’t my usual type, but his caramel-colored eyes and curled lashes won me over. So gentle, yet cheeky and playful at the same time. He was best friends with some of my close friends, but strangely, we were never in the same company at the same time. Something told me he couldn’t be…
