MyMy mom and Aunt Metzi were staring at me, wide-eyed and open-mouthed. Just one minute earlier, they had handed me a piece of chain, told me to hold onto the ends of it, and stand still.

I was told to let the chain hang down toward the floor in a slack loop and wait.

After less than 30 seconds of standing there, not sure what I was supposed to be waiting for, my feet suddenly started to tingle, and the chain began swinging back and forth of its own accord. After about 45 seconds, the chain started swinging wildly in its arc, and a sense of calm I had never known before came over me. It felt wonderful.

My mom, after closing her still gaping mouth, told me to give her the chain, and then I ran off to have ice cream with my cousins.

At the time, I was only seven years old, and this experience served as my introduction to the mystical world of "esoteric energy," which can be broadly defined as experiences and phenomena that defy measurement, and are thus distinguishable from scientific forms of energy.
