The Magical Dog That Took Us From Strangers to Best Friends

“I’m going to work, and if there’s a dog here when I get home, I won’t be upset,” I said to my girlfriend and future wife. I remember it like it was yesterday.
We were living on the other side of the country then.
I texted her a few hours later from my job at the cellphone store on that marshmallow cloud Sunday in Seattle during the spring:
“The manager asked if anyone wants to go home early, so I’m off work babe. Whatcha doing?”
“Great! I’m at the Seattle Human Society shelter in Bellevue. I think you should come here before going home,” she said, with a wink in her tone.
I arrived at the Humane Society. Walking past the polite cages with chihuahua after chihuahua, I was told they all had health problems because they were inbred. This was in order to meet a huge uptick in demand for Chihuahuas after Legally Blonde came out. I felt bad for them.
My sweetie had already invited an old friend to join her and the two of them were sitting with a little black dog who, to be honest, I thought was kinda lame. I found out he had been neutered the day before. I decided to be patient and withhold judgment until he was healed, and my girlfriend and friend…
