The most compassionate man I have ever met, Dad. I love you. Photo taken by the author.

I have always found my parents’ enduring companionship fascinating. As I navigate the complexities of adulthood and family life, I ponder what makes a life partnership fulfilling and lasting a lifetime. Little did I know that on one scorching hot day amidst the stifling humidity, a seemingly simple search for a sentimental item would unfold into a profound experience.

My partner and I had not discussed having a family until our late 30s. My parents secretly hoped to meet their grandchild one day but never brought up the topic. When we shared the news that we were expecting over a video call, it took them some minutes to register. They had long ago mentally resigned to their secret hope.

Living on the other side of the world, when we brought our 4-month-old baby for her first visit, my mom cheerfully shared that she had kept my baby clothes for 40 years, dreaming of the moment she could pass them on to her grandchild. That day had finally come. Limited by her mobility, she tasked Dad with collecting the keepsake bag from the storage room. Dad dutifully headed to the storage room, where everything seemed to enter, but nothing ever left.
