Unpack Your Envy
You’re envious of someone. (It’s okay, we all are.) Maybe they’re cuter or richer or more [whatever], perpetually glowing on Instagram above a flock of adoring emoji. You envy them for what they have, or what they don’t. Maybe you think of them at night, or first thing in the morning as you ride the train to the job, the life, the email inbox you wish looked more like theirs.
Envy is a tool. It’s green, it’s blue, it’s bottomless, but it’s also bright red and blinking, a sign that shows you what you want before you’re ready to articulate it. What piques your envy, and why? Sit with it. Stare at it. Reach past the discomfort of wanting someone else’s life and locate the enlightenment beyond.
